Girardville, February 6, 2007 - The MNA for Roberval, Karl Blackburn, has announced, on behalf of the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, Raymond Bachand, financial assistance of $500,000 for the Coopérative forestière de Girardville.
The Québec government's participation, consisting of a loan of $500,000 provided by Investissement Québec, will help the cooperative to continue its winter forest operations, carry out forest management work for the coming season and maintain 450 permanent and seasonal jobs.
"We are very happy to contribute to this project that will enable a key company of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean to continue avant-garde work in the consolidation of its forest activities in the region," Mr. Blackburn said.
In addition to the Québec government's participation, the Coopérative forestière de Girardville obtained assistance from Desjardins capital régional et coopératif, the BDC and the Caisse populaire Desjardins des Plaines boréales to complete the financing package of $1,485,000.
"This announcement is the culmination of a series of strategic changes that have affected our organization over the past year. In addition to renewing our management team and refocusing our activities on our areas of excellence, namely silvicultural work and forest harvesting, the new financing means we can count on financial partners that will help us to further develop our forestry cooperative and make it more cost-effective," mentioned the Managing Director of the Coopérative forestière de Girardville, Jérôme Simard.
"The Coopérative forestière de Girardville has played a very important role in the region's economic development since it was formed in 1979. The support provided today by the government and other private partners will enable this organization, which is known for innovative solutions, to make a significant contribution, throughout our region, to the overall project of consolidation and modernization of Québec's forest sector," MNA Blackburn concluded.
