Investment in Montérégie - Upton’s Burnbrae Farms to Receive Financial Assistance for a Project Exceeding $5.7M, According to Minister Nicole Ménard

Upton, June 20, 2012 - Nicole Ménard, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Montérégie region, announced today on behalf of Sam Hamad, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, that the Québec subsidiary of Burnbrae Farms has been awarded $425,000 in financial assistance. Burnbrae Farms will use the funds mainly to purchase new equipment to modernize its plant and improve productivity as part of a project with an estimated price tag of over $5.7 million.

"Modernizing the facility will allow Burnbrae Farms to slash its production costs and become more competitive," said Ménard. "The investment we announced today will bolster operations at the Upton plant and keep 45 jobs in the Montérégie area."

"Productivity is the lifeblood of any company's success, and the agri-food sector is no exception," Hamad noted. "To keep the agrifood industry going strong, it's imperative that processing facilities have access to the latest equipment so customers' needs can be met. Staying current also allows businesses to stand apart from the competition and gain new market shares."

Burnbrae Farms, a leading agri-food company and one of Canada's top egg producers, sells shell eggs, liquid eggs and hardboiled eggs to retail outlets, food service companies and industrial customers throughout Canada. The company operates facilities at various locations, including Upton, which was formerly known as Les Oeufs Bec-O Inc.

"Burnbrae Farms, the leading employer in the village of Upton, is delighted to receive this $425,000 in financial assistance," said Ty Diep, Operations Director for the company. "Our modernization initiative will require several million dollars, and this will help make it happen. By investing in the latest technology, we can continue to pursue our business strategies, maintain the skills of our 45 employees and stay competitive on a national level."
