$36M invested and jobs created - Yvon Marcoux Announces Funding for Winpak in Vaudreuil-Dorion

Vaudreuil, July 11, 2012 - Yvon Marcoux, MNA for Vaudreuil and Vice-chair of the Committee on Public Administration, announced today that Winpak Heat Seal Packaging will receive nearly $4.4 million in funding for an expansion project totalling $36 million. The announcement was made on behalf of Sam Hamad, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade, and Julie Boulet, Minister of Employment and Social Solidarity.

To enable the company to go ahead with its expansion, the Ministère du Développement économique, de l'Innovation et de l'Exportation, together with Investissement Québec, will be providing $4.1 million. The company will be acquiring a new site and cutting-edge production equipment.

With the addition of innovative new technology called Versaline, Winpak will boost its production significantly. Besides the 42 jobs created, the investment project will help maintain all the 340 jobs currently at the plant. Emploi-Québec is also granting up to $298,645 in funding over three years, which the Commission des partenaires du marché du travail has endorsed. This funding will go toward training not only new workers, but also 150 current employees, who may then be assigned new duties.

"Our government is very proud to help finance Winpak's project," declared Yvon Marcoux. "This Québec company has developed specific expertise in the manufacture of specialty packaging products for the food and pharmaceutical industries. It's the only Canadian and Québec manufacturer in its particular field, and it clearly dominates its sector in North America. I salute the inventiveness of this new technology, which will position our region favourably and no doubt create promising opportunities."

"Our government is pleased to contribute to the prosperity of the region of Vaudreuil-Soulanges through employee training," asserted Julie Boulet. "The funding granted to update employee skills will enable Winpak to set itself apart through the new products it'll offer. This is an example of how increasing employee expertise pays off. The company will be able to diversify its products and create wealth."

Winpak Heat Seal Packaging in Vaudreuil is a subsidiary of Winpak Ltd., a publicly traded company that manufactures flexible packaging for food and pharmaceuticals. The parent company hopes to develop its packaging division, and Winpak in Vaudreuil-Dorion sees this as a chance to position itself strongly as a top plant and to expand. Winpak has two plants; the second is located in Illinois.

"Government support is very important to us," said Winpak President Tim Johnson. "This project is an excellent opportunity because it will double the plant's size while supporting a significant increase in sales. For several years now, our division has been growing steadily thanks to our investments and capital assets. This has already helped us capture major market shares in the food and pharmaceutical industries."
