Around the Word Canada: A new voice in Montréal's video game industry

Montréal, June 25, 2015 – Around the Word and Dune Sound, two French companies specializing in video game dubbing and localization, teamed up with Syllabes, one of Montréal’s leading multimedia production studios, to create Around the Word Canada. Specializing in voice recording, the new studio will help increase the competitiveness of North America’s most innovative and creative multimedia companies. Fifteen jobs will be created over the next three years.

“Multimedia—the video game sector, in particular—has become Québec’s flagship industry. The presence of major international studios and the availability of skilled workers attract many industry-related companies. The arrival of Around the Word Canada will bolster one of Québec’s most strategic sector while creating jobs and generating positive spin-offs,” said Québec’s Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Exports, Jacques Daoust.

“We have tremendous growth potential in Québec—especially in Montréal—so we couldn’t have chosen a better location for our business,” said Michel Golgevit, General Manager of Around the Word. “Our clients and partners are video game industry giants, and some of them, like Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Ubisoft and Warner, have already opened internationally recognized studios in Québec. That’s one of the things that prompted us to invest here. But we also chose Montréal because of its pool of highly creative talent and competitive business costs,” he explained.

“By leveraging Syllabes’ know-how and our 15 years of dubbing expertise, we can help video game developers record their original versions to the highest technical and artistic standards,” said Olivier Rabat, Joint Manager and Technical Manager at Dune Sound. “Syllabes also runs an academy that trains French- and English-speaking voice actors, enabling studios to work with the best actors in North America and discover fresh talent at the same time,” he added.

“Around the Word Canada opens up great opportunities for the three partner companies and their teams in Québec, France and Germany,” said Nicolas Charbonneaux, President of Syllabes. “Greater Montréal has a rich multicultural fabric—and that is a huge plus because it enables us to work with the best people in the industry, whether they come from Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver, New York or Los Angeles. What’s more, we have state-of-the-art recording studios that can meet the needs of the most ambitious projects.”

Investissement Québec and Montréal International, which helped the three companies get their project off the ground, also welcome the arrival of Around the Word Canada in Greater Montréal.

“Our job is to show investors around the world what Québec has to offer. And we are proud that, working with our partners, we persuaded Around the Word and Dune Sound to come here. The new project, which involves an industry-related company in Québec, holds great promise for the future and shows how attractive Québec’s multimedia industry is,” said Pierre Gabriel Côté, President and CEO of Investissement Québec.

“The high¬-tech, creative and innovative industries have played a major role in driving wealth creation in Québec over the past few years,” explained Dominique Anglade, President and CEO of Montréal International. “A great addition like Around the Word Canada will strengthen the local value chain and increase the competitiveness of Québec studios, while shining a global spotlight on Greater Montréal and positioning the region as an attractive investment destination,” she added.
