Montréal snagged the no. 2 spot in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Safe Cities Index, placing it ahead of such cities as Stockholm, Amsterdam, San Francisco and Melbourne, Australia.
How Montréal earned a top score
The Safe Cities Index looked at safety and security in 50 cities around the world, focusing on four key factors: digital security, health security, infrastructure and personal safety. When The Economist tracked how each city performed across five other indexes (liveability rankings, worldwide cost of living, business environment rankings, democracy index and global food security), Montréal earned 2nd place.
“Deciding where to live is a personal choice for many city residents. For some, safety will be paramount. Others will prioritize culture and creativity… but often choice will be based on a mixture of reasons: an entrepreneur looking for the best place to start a business may also intend to start a family,” the study emphasizes.
Canada stands out as a great place to live
Clearly, Canada had the right mix to appeal to city dwellers. Two of the country’s major cities – Montréal and Toronto, which ranked number one – were top performers in the index.
