Varennes, June 3, 2013 – Élaine Zakaïb, Minister for Industrial Policy and the Banque de développement économique du Québec, joined by Stéphane Bergeron, Minister of Public Security, Minister responsible for the Outaouais region and MNA for Verchères, announced that Solmax International has been granted $800,000 in non-refundable financial assistance through Investissement Québec. The Varennes-based company, which specializes in the manufacture of waterproofing geomembranes, will use the assistance to carry out an expansion project, which is valued at $15 million and includes the creation of a new research centre.
“Québec manufacturing companies need to set their sights on strengthening their ability to compete and diversifying their export markets in the medium term,” asserted Élaine Zakaïb. “Solmax International is a major player in a growing sector, with products intended primarily for export. Through this project, the company will be able to improve both its competitiveness and its position on international markets. As such, it sets an example.”
Solmax International’s geomembranes are used to protect soil from contaminants in landfill, mining and other sites located in fragile ecosystems. The company plans to expand its manufacturing capacity by implementing a third production line, centralize its R&D activities and set up a quality control centre.
“Solmax International’s commercial successes are a clear indication that Québec businesses can compete effectively on different markets,” declared Stéphane Bergeron. “I’m delighted that my government is supporting this company’s expansion plan, which will ultimately create some 10 jobs and contribute to the economic development of the region.”
Solmax International is a world leader in the manufacture of geomembranes, as well as fluid confinement and transport solutions. The company’s clients include the biggest names in the mining, oil, waste management, civil engineering and water industries. The company owns plants in Varennes, Québec, as well as in Malaysia and Chile. The products it manufactures are distributed to 60 countries.
“With the new production line, we’ll be able to increase our productivity, continue growing, and supply our products to more companies on international markets,” explained Jacques Côté, President of Solmax International.
